Notification Actions

Notification Actions (Action Type 4) display non-blocking banner notifications at the top of Business Central pages. Unlike Message actions that require users to click OK before continuing, Notification actions display information without interrupting workflow, allowing users to continue working while the notification remains visible.

10.1 When to Use Notification Actions

Use Notification actions when you want to inform users about something important without forcing them to acknowledge the message before continuing their work.

Appropriate Use Cases: Background process status updates, informational alerts that do not require immediate action, reminders about related tasks, status indicators for the current record, system-generated workflow notifications.

10.2 Configuring Notification Actions

Configuration is similar to Message actions but produces a different user experience:

1. Create the validation condition

2. Add new action with Action Type = Notification

3. Configure notification text with clear, concise message

4. Test to verify notification appears and does not block work

10.3 Notification vs. Message: Key Differences

Message Actions (Modal Dialog):

• Block user workflow until acknowledged

• Require clicking OK to continue

• Center of screen, prominent display

• Use when user must read the information before proceeding

Notification Actions (Banner):

• Non-blocking, workflow continues immediately

• Appear at top of page, less intrusive

• Can be dismissed or ignored

• Use when information is helpful but not critical

10.4 Practical Examples

Example: Inventory Low Stock Alert

Requirement: When adding sales line for an item with low inventory, show notification without blocking the order.

Configuration:

• Trigger Table: 37 (Sales Line)

• Linked Table: Item (27)

• Condition: [27:30] is <10 (Item Inventory < 10 units)

• Notification Text: "Item [27:3] currently has only [27:30] units in stock. Consider checking availability before promising delivery dates."

Users see the notification but can continue entering the order while noting the inventory situation.
